The oldest zoo in the country was founded on 21 July 1843. You should go for a family outing.

Two centuries old

It all started in 1840 when the mayor of Antwerp visited the Amsterdam zoo during a business trip. After his visit, Jan was convinced that Antwerp needed its own zoo. The first plot of land was bought for the zoo next to the brand new wooden train station in March 1843! The collection grew over time and the zoo expanded over the years. The zoo was originally reserved for the middle-class. It was renowned for its rare plant and animal species and for its concerts.

Visit backstage

Today, this oasis of greenery in the heart of the city is proof of a will for sustainable development that combines discovery and joie de vivre.
I've always been drawn to the hidden side of things. I was very happy to be able to see how the zoo's dedicated employees work behind the scenes. There's a long corridor between the central train station and the zoo. It's normally closed to visitors, but we were allowed to visit backstage. We stepped into the tigers' bedrooms and the veterinarian's operating room and more. It was fascinating!

Marie-France, 32 Public relations manager

Born in Africa, I've lived between Europe, the United States and my homeland. A real mix of cultures! I'm always connected to social networks and on the lookout for great fashion, lifestyle, music and outing deals. I work in Antwerp as a public relations manager. I'm also a presenter for a TV music channel. My little extra: I like to get out and meet people.
