You're not 100 everyday! That' true for the Frans Hals Museum too. It's a very special place in Amsterdam because it specialises in Frans Hals, Haarlem's best-known painter. You can discover the exceptional work of this painter in a building with unique architecture.

A portrait expert

Frans Hals is known in the Netherlands for his stunning and evocative group portraits and for a more relaxed brushstroke that has made its way through the centuries. Born in Antwerp in 1582 - in an area that was part of the south of the country at the time - Hals first studied painting under Karel van Mander before going into art restoration. He painted until his death in 1666.

A detailed picture of the period's society

The museum provides an in-depth understanding of the painter's contribution and doesn't hesitate to compare him to other artists of the same period. Hals is acclaimed for his paintings’ realism which enables us to re-create the society of the period. From clergy to singers, nobles to merchants, his paintings are precious and full of information about the usages and customs of his time.
