A legendary museum at the University of Amsterdam, the Allard Pierson Museum houses a significant collection of unusual and rare objects, from ancient Greece and Egypt, as well as the Roman Empire. The museum is named after Allard Pierson, the first professor of classical archaeology at the University. He was a devoted scholar of antiquity and all its mysteries.

An impressive collection

The collection includes statues, pottery, sculptures, objects and various tools, painting a portrait of daily life in the classical age. It’s the type of place where I could easily lose myself for a whole day, admiring the collection of Etruscan statuettes that I particularly love. The museum is somewhat off the tourism radar which makes visiting refreshingly stress-free.

A specialised research centre

As it’s attached to the University, the Allard Pierson Museum functions as a research centre dedicated to the restoration and analysis of antique objects. One of the specialities of the Allard Pierson is the examination of mummies using a scanner to view their internal composition. Of course I’m not going to give away what these studies have revealed, you’ll have to see for yourself, but the results are fascinating.
