What could be nicer than finishing off an evening out at the club Maloe Melo, a legendary venue that has offered live blues and roots music for 25 years, in the popular district of Jordaan? The atmosphere is always excellent and the drinks are reasonably priced!

A public of all ages

After a visit to a restaurant with friends, it was off to Maloe Melo. My last visit was in 2010, when I saw Big Dez. Driven along by the singer/guitarist Phil Hernandez, the French band made a big impression on me. Especially because in this very small hall with its low ceiling, where it feels as though the audience is also on stage, there is no room for mistakes. This time, it was the turn of local musicians to play a jam session, which was really successful. Accompanied on the organ by the owner of the premises, Jur Scherpenzeel, a cigar clamped in his lips, they were given encouragement by an audience of all ages.

Talent in spades

At Maloe Melo, there are no celebrities, just musicians, although blues or rock legends do regularly come and perform to wind down after an official concert, and at least they do not have to make a special trip. Their portraits are on the walls of the establishment, in an otherwise fairly dowdy décor. Patti Smith, Doug Sahm, a very young Bruce Springsteen, they all played here. And so it continues. The club is a veritable nursery for talent. Groups form and cut their teeth here, and reinvent the blues, rock, and even ska or punk. Although Maloe Melo prides itself on being the “home of the blues”, it is open to all genres.
Open 7 days a week, 9 pm to 3 am during the week and until 4 am at weekends. Free entry.
