The hip bar on the Rembrandtsplein, De Kroon (the name translates as the Crown) still reigns supreme in Amsterdam's nightlife.

History and design: a potent cocktail

Don't be fooled! The 'high fashion' interior of the space conceals a rich past. After all, it was in 1898, the year in which Wilhelmina was crowned Queen of the Netherlands (the great-grandmother of the current king), that De Kroon originally opened its doors, hence the name.

Today, a modern space accented by dazzling lighting fixtures awaits night-time revellers on the first floor of this elegant building. Louis XVI chairs upholstered in black leather and the former bar from an English library (in the centre of which is an exhibit of jars full of animals preserved in formaldehyde and entomological specimens) gives it a unique atmosphere that appeals to a highly diverse clientele.

Incomparable view of the Rembrandtplein

The star attraction of the place has got to be the covered terrace overlooking the Rembrandtplein. Decorated in pale tints, it's the perfect setting for dinner with friends before or after a cultural outing. The menu features highlights of classic French cuisine, with a few Italian notes here and there. And you may be tempted to finish the night off with champagne! On Fridays and Saturdays, De Kroon is transformed into a dance floor, much to the delight of lovers of salsa, funk and house.
