A table d’hôte worth a detourAmsterdam

A unique menuThis very good restaurant, run like a French-style table d’hôte, is located in the super-chic neighbourhood of Amsterdam North where brand new houses sit next to houses with boarded up windows slated for demolition. It serves a single five-course menu each week (sometimes with a cheese break, if you don't mind paying a little extra). The meals are delicious, prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is relaxed.
Come by ferry!Café Modern's decor is minimalist. The pale yellow and vert-de-gris walls are reminscent of an industrial past which, although common in the North district, doesn't quite fit the history of this building which used to house a bank. A nice little detail: the owners have left the underground vault room intact, protected from the curious by a screen and an armoured door which are now always open. Take a look in on your way to the restrooms; it's right across the hall. To make the evening really special, take the free ferry (on foot or with your bicycle) linking the central station with this bank of the IJ. The restaurant is close by and the evening show guaranteed! Café Modern sells hot snacks for lunch under the name "Jacques Jour". A hotel called "Sweet Dreamzzz" will open upstairs in April 2013.
I’m the mother of two supercharged children. I’ve also been living a great love affair with Holland for the past 20 years! I’ll take you to places in Amsterdam that will make you feel good, where the products and the welcome are high quality and where, most importantly, you’ll never stress out. Ready to go?
