Zaandam isn't Amsterdam but is on the tourist trail for all those visiting the windmills. So why not do the opposite and have your base in Zaandam while visiting the region. Zaandam was one of the oldest industrial centres and is bursting with pretty streets and historic landmarks.

New architecture

For the last two years, the town has boasted a new landmark, visible from a great distance in this region of polders. A hotel with crazy, colourful architecture. The architect Wilfried van Winden designed a building, which has become the new symbol of the town. It looks like a giant pile of typical regional houses (Zaanse huisen), all of them green save for one blue, as a homage to Monet's blue house.

Four stars aside...

Behind these green façades, 160 4-star rooms, from the basic double room to the luxuriously fitted-out grande suite. To contrast with the historic façades, all the rooms are ultra modern. Their names and decorations take inspiration from historic town figures, such as Enricus Verkade (chocolate), Albert Hein (supermarkets) or even Tsar Peter the Great who lived here for several years in order to learn navigational skills.

Even though Zaandam has a wealth of history and lots of things to do, clearly some visitors will want to head to the capital. As the hotel is literally next to the station it means that your room is just 15 minutes from the centre of Amsterdam. You can't do any better.

I spend a lot of time in front of the computer, but I prefer to be followed on a bicycle than on Twitter. I love Amsterdam for...its little streets, riches, treasures and all of the spots where you can get a really good beer. Follow the guide! My little extra: discovering nature
