As its name suggests, the Canal House Hotel is a hotel within a house on Amsterdam’s canals. In actual fact it consists of two Renaissance houses next to the Keizersgracht, one of the three major central canals (the one in the middle). Unlike a great many of the city centre hotels, the Canal House has retained the original interior fittings and decorations of these houses.

A taste of Dutch bourgeoisie

And what makes it so delightful is that the panelling, structure and mouldings on the ceilings are all original. Spending a night here is a unique opportunity to experience an environment familiar to wealthy Dutch merchants of the 17th century. The traditional arrangement of its rooms means customers can visit the kitchen and rub shoulders with the staff. It’s a really nice way of doing things and I love it.

All the mod cons

Despite the constant presence of the past, it has all the comforts you’d expect of a luxury hotel, including Wi-Fi in all bedrooms and flat screen TVs. The most spectacular feature is the furniture, which includes some of the biggest names in contemporary design in the Netherlands. It all makes for a harmonious combination, like the photos on the walls, which provide wonderful reproductions of works by the Dutch Masters.

I spend a lot of time in front of the computer, but I prefer to be followed on a bicycle than on Twitter. I love Amsterdam for...its little streets, riches, treasures and all of the spots where you can get a really good beer. Follow the guide! My little extra: discovering nature
