Brussels
City of contrasts
European capital of culture with a mining past, Essen is now a green city, converted into the service sector.
Located in the Ruhr Basin, Essen was once home to the country’s largest coal, iron and steel factories. Today, it is home to an industrial monument listed as World Heritage by UNESCO: the industrial complex of the Zollverein coal mine.
The city has undergone a major conversion and was able to revive its economy and attract businesses. Essen has recently received the titles of Green City and Cultural Capital.
If we were to mention only one museum, it would undoubtedly be the Folkwang, dedicated to modernism, with works by Matisse, Cézanne, van Gogh or even Gauguin, housing over 600 paintings and 200 sculptures.
