Looking for a little break from the hustle and bustle of the city? Come see the animals at Diergaarde Blijdorp. A spectacular zoo with a large indoor underwater display: the Oceanium.

Oldest zoo in the Netherlands

What Rotterdammer didn't grow up with it? I spent a lot of time here as a child and I still occasionally visit Diergaarde Blijdorp. The oldest zoo in the Netherlands, it opened in 1983 in the Rotterdam district of Blijdorp. And it still has its vintage charm. For example, the old entrance has remained unchanged, despite the brand-new one on the other side of the park. The old-fashioned green letters above the stone gates and the decorative white fencing around the zoo are still intact. But actually, the zoo is special for its very minimal use of fences. The animals are separated by trenches and canals.

Underwater world

The animals are displayed whenever possible in their natural habitat. For example, there is a huge bat cave where hundreds of bats swish past your head. Or what about a wolf valley, a large, wooded territory inhabited by a pack of wolves. But the most popular attraction has got to be the Oceanium. A huge aquarium where you can see fish, sharks, turtles and other aquatic life. A new feature is the butterfly house Amazonica, the largest of its kind in Europe. Plenty to see and to do!

I work in communications and have kept an on-line fashion journal for years. I'll show you around Rotterdam, my home town, a magical place open on the world. Sparkling restaurants, deliciously hidden between sea and sky. My little extra: globetrotter and multi-lingual
