Just a few kilometres outside Paris, on a loop of the Seine, l'Ile de Chatou provides walkers with luminosity and a timeless atmosphere which inspired the impressionists. Great for a breath of fresh air on an autumnal walk followed by hot chocolate when you get back.

The impressionists

At the Fournaise Museum, it’s interesting to go and see paintings about life in France at the beginning of the 20th century, if only to assess how things have progressed over the period of a century. And as the artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir said at the time, “You won’t regret your journey; it’s the prettiest location in the area surrounding Paris”.

Cruise and guingettes

You can also see the changing colours and reflections that inspired Claude Monet as you glide down the Seine to Bougival, enjoying the silence on board the “Dénicheur”. The guingettes (cafés) alongside the Seine so wonderfully depicted by Renoir are reminders of a happy era, both modest and carefree. And it so happens that they’re still there, next to the museum, so you can enjoy a good and timeless lunch there. Happiness is easy!

Steve, 49 ENTREPRENEUR

Comfortable in working-class neighbourhoods and the tonier areas of Paris, I never get tired of rediscovering this timeless city. The Sex Pistols set the pace when I was younger. New technologies fill my working days now. My little extra: discovering fine eating spots around the capital for romantic dinners!
