Opposite the Louvre, far from the well-trodden paths of Paris’ trendiest areas, le Fumoir is a chic and cool Paris institution, which only improves with age. People dine there with friends or enjoy really delicious cocktails* at white-topped tables at the end of the evening.

A long history

Le Fumoir set up shop before everyone else, fifteen or so years ago, opposite what would turn out to be one of the finest examples of architectural renovation of the last few decades: le Grand Louvre. The people who established it found a way of creating the kind of atmosphere you usually only find in Paris’ Palace bars, and this applies whatever time of day you go there. Customers vary a lot depending on the time of day: a mix of advertising executives, tourists with their backpacks, trendy youngsters, young city types and barflies.

Club-like

Inside there is a hushed atmosphere both during the day and at night, and there is a small, peaceful and sunny terrace looking out towards the Louvre. The décor is meticulous: thick wooden floorboards, wide windows (the light from which is filtered by blinds), various mirrors and old tables selected with care. The wide bar, the Chesterfield armchairs and the reading room at the back all contribute towards its wonderfully antiquated and soothing colonial atmosphere.

Chic menu

People come here for the first time at happy hour because of its carefully-compiled cocktail menu (Dry Martinis, as well as single malt whiskies). Then, if there’s an opportunity and if there are any tables left, you can while away the evening enjoying some sophisticated food and excellent wine.
The name of the bar, Le Fumoir, has not been changed, despite the fact that smoking is no longer permitted in public buildings; a little bit of provocation for a place that is very accessible and, to put it simply, classy.

Cocktails: from €6.00 to €12.00.
Evening menu: starter, main course and dessert €35.00.

* Alcoholic beverages should be consumed in moderation. Please drink responsibly.

Comfortable in working-class neighbourhoods and the tonier areas of Paris, I never get tired of rediscovering this timeless city. The Sex Pistols set the pace when I was younger. New technologies fill my working days now. My little extra: discovering fine eating spots around the capital for romantic dinners!
