A friendly kitchen in a young atmosphere. A great Parisian spot…

A Bistro?

The French dictionary has many words for it: estaminet, guinguette, troquet, café, buvette, depending where you are, and which way you’re travelling. In Paris, it’s a bistro. L'Ebauchoir, a sought-after Parisian bistro is popular with the local regulars, and those who have found the place by chance or word of mouth and obviously keep coming back.

A little walk

Leaving the car, there are two ways to get to l'Ebauchoir. If, as I did throughout my childhood, you’re starting from the Bastille, you’ll be walking through the Faubourg. I always used to stop at rue Saint-Nicolas where my mother’s studio was, and we would have lunch in a bistro whose name I have, of course, forgotten, but which could quite easily have been l'Ebauchoir. The tiles, the smells, the sounds, they’re all there. You can also decide to go bargain hunting or explore the typical market in Place d'Aligre. You are only a few steps away, after all.

A culinary delight

The traditional bistro dishes are all there, and you won’t be disappointed. For a long time this place has been serving mouth-watering, cheerful food, a menu that poses only one problem… the choice. Giving an exhaustive list would be stupid; I think I have, over time, tried almost everything (or had a taste from my neighbour’s plate). If you order the EUR 25 menu, you will have more than enough to satisfy your appetite! I remember a choux tartelette with vanilla ice cream and melted chocolate, served with a smile, also home-made. The cooked and raw fruit desserts – yum! And the oysters are just excellent. From floor to ceiling, at the bar and on the plate, this place is faultless. You can bet this wonderful bistro is here to stay.

Think about booking…

Comfortable in working-class neighbourhoods and the tonier areas of Paris, I never get tired of rediscovering this timeless city. The Sex Pistols set the pace when I was younger. New technologies fill my working days now. My little extra: discovering fine eating spots around the capital for romantic dinners!
