For me (and presumably for others), Christmas means the cosy warmth of home, Christstollen, cinnamon tea and slippers! Here, everything is made of “Filz” or felt, but in this shop, which has been around since 1925, they don’t just make slippers!

A family tradition

In 1925, in the centre of Cologne, a brother and sister by the name of Gnoss opened a small felt shop. At the time, they really needed to believe in their business, because while felt was warm, it certainly wasn’t fashionable! Many years later, at the age of 16, a young apprentice named Von Kannen started working with the Gnoss siblings, and continued to work there throughout his life. In 1990, he took over the business and kept the original family name. Today, the shop on Aposteln Street is as charming as it always was.

Not just slippers

I admit that for me it’s the slippers I love, and everyone in our home has at least two pairs. And that’s not including the ones I’ve bought for friends, as in Germany guests must be made to feel at home and they are often asked whether they’d like some slippers to wear! They come in a wide range of colours, including yellow, red and pine green. But at Filz Gnoss, you can also find all sorts of gift ideas, which can be made of felt or hand crafted, to take home with you: table mats, place mats, key holders, bottle covers, cushions, Christmas and table decorations, and even a miniature version of Cologne cathedral!

The Cologne area provides my daughters and I with real quality of life. I like conviviality, healthy things, crafts and every kind of creativity. Together, we'll explore the side of Cologne that promotes the art of living. My little extra: the art of living.
