I know that the museum of East Asian art is an interesting location, but for me it’s more a place of relaxation. It offers freshly-infused green teas and is an ideal spot to let your thoughts flow while looking out over the Aachener Weiher.

Japanese garden

There is no greater contrast: in summertime the Aachener Weiher, an artificial pond, is alive with activity, while the nearby museum is a bastion of supreme calm. The building was created by Kunio Maekawa and is built in spatial and architectural harmony with the surrounding green spaces. Inside, low, pavilion-like buildings entice you to stay a while and relax. With a good book, or simply happy to daydream, the Japanese garden is a wonderful location to while away the time.

Buddha brings contentment

If you do pay a visit, the museum itself is of course well worth looking around. The collection includes Buddhist paintings and wooden sculptures, as well as Japanese screen paintings, coloured wooden engravings and lacquer artworks. The sacred bronze works and ceramics from China are a delight to behold.

And because the collection is too vast for the available space, the display changes several times a year. Until 17 July, the most important works from Korean art and culture are on display together for the first time in Germany. Once you have finished your visit and enjoyed a giant ice cream in the museum café, surrounded by Buddhist paintings, you might just feel like a contented Buddha yourself!

I've always loved Cologne. The city is industrial and romantic at the same time. I love my city for its galleries, classical concerts and elegant restaurants and its traditional and very trendy bars! My little extra: I love words, the arts and literature!
