Near the Grand Place, walking down Rue au Beurre is a challenge for anyone on a diet, for it is here that you will find Belgium's finest chocolatiers. Top of the podium is Darcis, complete with tasting room.

Chocolate fine arts

Belgian chocolatier Jean-Philippe Darcis draws inspiration from the past in his creations. And so, it would seem, does his shop window. The white woodwork immediately grabs my attention, reminding me of the pastry shops of old. Darcis belongs to the long-standing chocolate-making traditions of Verviers. He adores Belgian chocolate but doesn't overdo things: his pastries strike the right balance between fruitiness and freshness, and of course chocolate – preferably dark.

Macaroon surprise

Darcis also does macaroons, but with a difference. He incorporates them into his pastries, meaning I no longer need to choose between cake or macaroon. The blend, although surprising, is a success. In fact I might just have another... no, on second thoughts I'll take a jar of dark chocolate and hazelnut spread – as a gift for someone!
