In Brussels, you don't have to go to a museum to see impressive works of art. Just glance around when you take the metro and you'll discover some real jewels!
"A journey through the largest underground art gallery in Brussels." That's how the public transport company, Société des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles (STIB), describes its ongoing commitment to contemporary art. When the plans for a metro in Brussels began to gel in the early 1960s, the designers imagined the new network as an open setting that would be both lively and original. Under the guidance of the groups involved, over 80 works of art now decorate the platforms, ticket counter rooms and hallways, giving the 69 metro stations a special appeal.
Whether they're aware of it or not, thousands of travellers come face to face with works of art by famous Belgian artists on their way to work and school, alone and with friends. Many different artistic disciplines are represented including painting, sculpture, photography and glass-making. Every kind of material is used ranging from canvas to bronze to wood to glass and steel. It's a beautiful project that proves that culture is priceless!
I work as a fashion consultant, tear through the papers every morning, race off to concerts whenever I can and claim ""belgitude"" as a guarantee of original quality! My little extra: new shops, trendy concept-stores, organic restaurants and artists' workshops.
