A venerable classic in Brussels, La Mer du Nord is absolutely the place to go for fish and shellfish. A lovely fish chowder in winter can do one more good than a whole box of sugary chocolates. People come from all over Belgium to taste the outstanding recipes and local produce. It's a seafood bar where you can select a range of dishes to snack on at your own speed, on-site.

Oysters galore and shrimp croquettes

At Mer du Nord, the food goes straight from the market to the kitchen, served according to the catch of the day. The oysters are mouth-watering and the calamari and shrimp croquettes will melt in your mouth. Even in winter, you can eat at a table outdoors - standing up, I might add. It's better to get there early for lunch, though. They tend to practically sell out by 1 PM.

Unbeatable freshness

No question whatsoever of picking up a bug from a Mer du Nord meal, the freshness of the ingredients is absolutely impeccable. Feel free to choose shellfish, mussels or escargots, and order seconds, if there's any left! I love to go there with friends for a meal that always a good time.
