After too much exposure to the rhythm of urban life, I needed a break. I needed to listen to my body and achieve greater harmony between body and mind. A friend recommended the Brussels Zen Centre and Koen Vermeulen, who runs it.

An alternative philosophy

"Contentment is everywhere, you need to simply embrace it", Koen explains to his new students. For him, to be in harmony with our environment in the widest sense allows us to enjoy the different pleasures of life. Forget selfish pleasures, block out contemporary consumerism and open up to the world around you.

Kwan Um Zen

The Zen school chosen by the centre teaches philosophy based on harmony: understanding and taking into account the happiness of others. Koen likes to swim against the tide of contemporary individualism and enjoys taking people on board.

At the Zen Centre, different options are available: initiation to meditation over several weeks or Zen meditation sessions every Thursday (7:30pm to 9pm) and Tuesday (6:45pm to 8:45pm). Activities include energising exercises, meditation and Korean chants in a delightful atmosphere that is pleasingly contagious.

Gabriel, 32 TENNIS PRO

I teach tennis in the city and also write about culture for a number of publications. I love to travel and meet people. My city? It's an improv concert in a down-to-earth bar, an exhibition built on a work site, a play performed in the heart of the old city... My little extra: combining sport and culture!
