Overwhelmed by the constant pace of the city, I needed a breath of fresh air. As it happened, I was directed to the Maximilien Park Farm, not far from Tour et Taxis. There, I was quickly charmed by this little Noah's ark in a verdant green setting.

A utopian place

There's nothing dull about this place - it has been the location for several visionary endeavours through the centuries. First of all, in May 1835 the site saw the construction of the first European station which operated until 1854. Then for the Brussels World’s Fair in 58, where the Sabena heliport was boldly located right in the centre of Brussels. Finally, in 1987 the idea for an urban farm came into being for Maximilien Park. It was opened two years later and continues to be a success today thanks to the skill of the non-profit organisation that manages it.

Nature and biodiversity

Located not far from the city centre, the Farm sets out to be a refuge for biodiversity. In addition to its numerous animals, you will also see insect houses, beehives and hedgerows to attract domestic bees. Raising public awareness of the importance of the environment, inviting the public to participate in bee-keeping workshops and composting workshops are just some of the great initiatives organised by the farm. Whether you spend an hour or an entire afternoon, the visit will recharge your batteries and offer you a welcome change of scenery before leaving this haven for the urban jungle.
Gabriel, 32 TENNIS PRO

I teach tennis in the city and also write about culture for a number of publications. I love to travel and meet people. My city? It's an improv concert in a down-to-earth bar, an exhibition built on a work site, a play performed in the heart of the old city... My little extra: combining sport and culture!
