Things don’t get much mellower than a multitude of rare plants and flowers gathered together in a single location. The Hortus Botanicus is a very lovely botanical garden where it’s easy to get your fill of oxygen. This lush refuge, where I like to spend hours walking at weekends, makes a nice countryside break from Amsterdam – always welcome when I want to recharge my batteries.

One of the world’s first botanical gardens

More than 4,000 plant species are on show in the greenhouses and gardens. Situated in the Plantage district on the edge of the city centre, you’ll find magnificent butterflies and huge palm trees here. The gardens change throughout the year and are as lovely in winter as they are in summer. With more than 6,000 plants, it’s impossible not to discover something new each time you go there.

Jasmine tea at l'Orangerie

L'Orangerie is the café restaurant at the Hortus Botanicus. I like to stop off after a walk for a cup of tea and enjoy the plants they grow there. I find I end up breathing more freely and unwinding completely after just an hour.

I love Amsterdam's open spirit. It's easy to meet people and have rich, interesting conversations. The heart of the city is bubbling over with cultural initiatives, secret restaurants and nature routes that relax you in no time. I want to share it all with you!
