Café Saarein is an Amsterdam institution. Originally conceived as a meeting place for the lesbian community, it changed and opened to other groups, refusing any form of exclusivity. I love the music played in the evening and the feeling that anything can happen there.

The appeal of Bruine Kroegen

Café Saarein is one of the last Bruine Kroegen - traditional pubs - still in existence in the city of Amsterdam. With its interior from the beginning of the 20th century, the place is quite prized and different from other more standard bars in the neighbourhood. A group of 10 women took over the bar in 1978 and turned it into a place for meeting and exchange for a section of the population that had very little representation elsewhere.

A refreshing opening

Since the bar was taken over by Dia in 1999, Café Saarein has drawn an eclectic crowd in a tolerant setting where you can play billiards while listening to rock. The cosy café's atmosphere means that it's easy to meet new people at any time of the day. Nobody's takes themself too seriously and everyone has a good time. I never miss the Pinq Radio live programme on Friday evenings. Open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4:00 pm to 1:00 am; Friday from 4:00 pm to 2:00 am; Saturday from noon to 2:00 am and Sunday from 2:00 pm to 1:00 am.

I love Amsterdam's open spirit. It's easy to meet people and have rich, interesting conversations. The heart of the city is bubbling over with cultural initiatives, secret restaurants and nature routes that relax you in no time. I want to share it all with you!
