Founded in 1968 by the late Kees Kousemaker, the house of Lambiek is a legendary address for comic book collectors.
You can't miss the bookshop. A figure of Ambrose welcomes you at the door astride his bike! The potbellied neighbour of 'Spike and Suzy' keeps a watchful eye on the stash of several thousand comic books. The grandfather of comic book shops in Europe has plenty to please even the most discerning collectors. There are traditional comics (mostly Dutch, but there are also some shelves of foreign-language editions), and underground comics (such as the renowned American ZAP Comix), or autobiographical comics and graphic novels. And there are plenty of anthologies too: how about the fascinating compilations of American newspaper comics from the years 1900-1950?
The entire Lambiek shop is steeped in comic book history. On the walls, drawings by Franquin, Peyo, Avril, Dupuy & Berberian. Downstairs, rotating exhibitions featuring both established names and young talent. Indefatigable, and always up-to-date with the latest in the world of comics, the shop Kees Kousemaker founded is constantly being reinvented. And its success has not gone unnoticed. No surprise that it's made an impression on visitors, such as the French novelist Laurent Fétis, who mentions it in his book 'Innocent X' (collection Série Noire).
