Have you ever tried garlic ice cream? Either way, book a table at The Garlic Queen. This famous plant, with its anti-oxidant qualities, is on the menu, from the aperitif to the dessert in the most unexpected of incarnations, and you will be amazed! (Vampires should abstain).

A family dining atmosphere

The temple of garlic occupies an old town centre house, at the heart of the gay district of Amsterdam, which seems only to be held together by the Chinese massage centre and "coffee-shop" on either side of it. On the inside, the décor has a rather dated feel but this in no way detracts from the delicious cuisine of Geert, the chef who sold his soul to the queen of Garlic. Just watching him at work with the ovens would lead one to imagine almost a family feast, except that there are no children.

Garlic in multiple incarnations, and more

The feast begins with an oven-roasted head of garlic, as unctuous as one could hope for, which can be spread on fresh bread. This is followed by a garlic soup, perfectly flavoured fish, an accomplished pot-au-feu, and ending with a garlic-flavoured ice cream. Having consumed about twenty cloves of garlic during the course of the meal, my blood pressure will thank me for this! With the taste buds still working, I pay the bill and pick up an “after garlic” chewing gum. I still need to find a taxi…

Open Wednesday to Sunday from 5 pm to 11 pm.

Menu of the day €33.50 or à la carte (available in Dutch, French and English).
Menu without garlic on request. Booking recommended.
