This café restaurant is named after one of its best features: the northern light. On the north shore of the IJ, its green terrace faces south towards the city. It’s a peaceful place to enjoy a drink on the grass in the sun.
When I moved into my new district, to the north of Westerpark, I tried to acquaint myself with the surrounding area. It was when I was taking the ferry to the northern shore of the IJ that I discovered the Noorderlicht, a kind of large plastic conservatory housing a restaurant, a bar and a pool room in which smoking was permitted*.
A unique location
It is located in one of those unlikely Amsterdam places, the old naval NDSM shipyards, the huge sheds and brownfield areas of which are occupied by squatter artists, as well as being used as housing for students and media company offices. What I like about it is the embankment with the waterside terrace. Service is cool and orders are brought to you as long as you’ve placed the sign with your order number next to you on the grass.
Pleasant summer afternoons
My favourite time is when the sun is setting and the lights of the city start coming on on the other side of the river. And when nightfall arrives, you can eat in the cosy interior with its comfortable armchairs and soft lighting. Once again, I prefer to stay outside. Sometimes, in summer, regulars light fires made from pallets, which helps to draw out a pleasant summer’s afternoon.
* Smoking seriously damages your health. Smoking kills.
I spend a lot of time in front of the computer, but I prefer to be followed on a bicycle than on Twitter. I love Amsterdam for...its little streets, riches, treasures and all of the spots where you can get a really good beer. Follow the guide! My little extra: discovering nature
