Moutiers, skiing and Beaufort cheese

Courchevel, Meribel, Les Menuires, Valmorel and Val Thorens are all well-known resorts for powder snow lovers. To get there, you must first reach Moûtiers, situated in the heart of the Tarentaise Valley.

With its narrow streets centred around the Saint-Pierre Cathedral, this small town was initially built around a monastery founded around the year 1000. Incidentally, it once bore a name that could be the perfect mashup between Game of Thrones and Disney: Darantasia, which means “living waters” in Celtic. Its current name, Moûtiers, could very well be derived from the word “monastery”.

The city hosts two historic museums and a dairy co-op where the Beaufort cheese is made, a type of Gruyère with a concave grinding wheel. This peculiar form once allowed it to be fitted to the back of mules during their descent from the alpine pastures.
