In the heart of the Alps, Albertville is famous for hosting the 1992 Winter Olympics. But what is the history of this well-known destination for skiers?

Albertville, the medieval town

In the heart of the Alps, Albertville stands at the crossroads of 4 valleys, landmarks for skiers and hikers from all sides. This city is also rich with a fascinating past that you can discover during your visit.

Albertville is the result of the union of two villages: Conflans and l’Hôpital. Conflans was perched on top of a rocky cliff, overlooking the valleys of Arly and Isère and watching over the gates of the city. In Roman times, it was a crossing point on the way from Milan to Vienna. L’Hôpital refers to the hospitality of a house founded at the end of the 12th century to welcome travellers and pilgrims.

Albertville was founded in 1835 by the King of Sardinia, Charles-Albert, by uniting the two villages. If you have not guessed it yet, Charles-Albert renamed the city in his own honour.
