Belgium: Brussels

In a nutshell...

Known as the capital of comic strips, Brussels is also unique for its mix of modern buildings and Art Nouveau style homes.

An animated and festive city, it is not rare to witness a fanfare or a parade in the Grand Place nor is it uncommon to see the Mannekenpis being adomed in a new costume; Brussels is a city for walking.
The city is spread out, with 19 districts depicting many different faces of the capital. Ixelles is famous for its nightlife, where Saint-Gilles, particularly the Maison Horta, is popular with those who are interested in Art Nouveau.
Truly European in character, Brussels offers all the Belgian specialities, from beer to waffles, but Italian and French dishes are also popular. This is a city where everyone can find something of interest.

Brussels : Bars

L'archiduc

All year long :
    Everyday, from 16:00 to 05:00

This bar located in Antoine-Dansaert street is surrounded in myth and legend. Opened in 1937 by Madam Alice, in sexy bedroom attire and going by the name of Amour, it was taken over by jazzman Stan Brenders in 1953 and became THE address for jazz in Brussels. Jacques Brel, Jimmy Smith, Nat King Cole and plenty others performed here. Today, it is still the place to listen to jazz and sip a cocktail. The ambience is cozy and subtle, dim lights encourage customers to sit back in small art deco armchairs and relax with a piscosour (a house specialty based on pisco, a chilean alcohol, lemon and sugar.) or a whiskey or boubon. Live concerts Every Monday from 11pm in the summer and Saturdays and Sundays at 5pm from September till April. This is also the spot for night owls because often the doors don't close until dawn.
