Belgium: Brussels
Areas in the city:
In a nutshell...
Known as the capital of comic strips, Brussels is also unique for its mix of modern buildings and Art Nouveau style homes.
An animated and festive city, it is not rare to witness a fanfare or a parade in the Grand Place nor is it uncommon to see the Mannekenpis being adomed in a new costume; Brussels is a city for walking.
The city is spread out, with 19 districts depicting many different faces of the capital. Ixelles is famous for its nightlife, where Saint-Gilles, particularly the Maison Horta, is popular with those who are interested in Art Nouveau.
Truly European in character, Brussels offers all the Belgian specialities, from beer to waffles, but Italian and French dishes are also popular. This is a city where everyone can find something of interest.
Brussels : Bars

All year long :
Everyday, from 16:00 to 05:00
This bar in the rue Antoine-Dansaert, fashion and designer district, is a mythical place in Brussels.
Opened in 1937 by Madam Alice as a sexy boudoir called Amour, it was then taken over by the jazzman Stan Brenders in 1953 and went on to become a jazz landmark in Brussels. Jacques Brel, Jimmy Smith, Nat King Cole and many others have played here.
You can still listen to jazz here whilst sipping a cocktail. The cosy decor and filtered lighting encourage patrons to settle down in small Art Deco armchairs and sip on piscosour (house speciality made with pisco, a Chilian alcohol, lemon and sugar) or one of the many whiskies or bourbons.
Live concerts every Monday, at 11pm in the summer, and Saturdays and Sundays at 5pm from September to April. L'Archiduc is the place for night owls since it's not unusual for the place to close at dawn.
