Upside Down – Les Arctiques
From 30th September 2008 to 11th January 2009
"Upside Down: les Arctiques" offers visitors an unique experience: the chance to explore, for the first time in Europe, a complete range of Eskimo and Inuit arts, based on a journey round the icecap, from Siberia to Alaska, in search of the Evenk, Dorset and Kuskokwim civilisations...
Invited by Edmund Carpenter and the Musée du Quai Branly to create a visual and sensory environment that would increase receptiveness to the Eskimo universe, visual artist Doug Wheeler has recreated an "Arctic environment" inside the exhibition, which features 500 of the most important works of ancient Eskimo and Inuit cultures. They are all representative of major epochs, cultures and sites, and illustrate the extraordinary environment of the Arctic regions.
