Belgium: Brussels

In a nutshell...

Known as the capital of comic strips, Brussels is also unique for its mix of modern buildings and Art Nouveau style homes.

An animated and festive city, it is not rare to witness a fanfare or a parade in the Grand Place nor is it uncommon to see the Mannekenpis being adomed in a new costume; Brussels is a city for walking.
The city is spread out, with 19 districts depicting many different faces of the capital. Ixelles is famous for its nightlife, where Saint-Gilles, particularly the Maison Horta, is popular with those who are interested in Art Nouveau.
Truly European in character, Brussels offers all the Belgian specialities, from beer to waffles, but Italian and French dishes are also popular. This is a city where everyone can find something of interest.

Classic Brussels

Brussels is not a city that can be seen in a day, it is composed of 19 different communities, each with their own unique treasures to offer. Nevertheless, for those that don't have a lot of time, the top area to visit is the old city center featuring the Grand Place in all of its traditional Flemmish glory and the City Hall. Next up are the Saint-Hubert galleries and elegant shopping center covered by a beautifu stained glass ceiling. And for art lovers, the royal museums of ancient and modern art are filled with the work of Belgian and foreign artists. There is also a museum of Musical Instruments that offers an impressionable idea of the Art Nouveau style of architecture. Shoppers should find their way to Sablon for some antiques and secondhand steals. Finally, what trip would be complete with out at least trying some famous Belgian chocolate? These stops should give anyone a good sense of Brussels culture.
