In a nutshell...
Saint Géry and Sablons
To the South-West of the Royal Palace, the Guild of Crossbowmen once practiced on what was a sandy marsh and built there a chapel which would become the Notre-Dame church, masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic architecture. This is the top destination for those who like antiques, shopping and art galleries. During the day the square of Small Sablon is calm, while at night the Grand Sablon is illuminated by the stained glass of Notre Dame and becomes a popular going out spot for chic Brusselians!
The heart of the medieval city, Brouscella, the Saint-Gery Island became a central meeting point when a market place was installed there at the end of the 19th century. The space now welcomes art expositions and is surrounded by lively cafes, restaurants and bars that attract the night crowd looking to stay out till the wee hours.
