Belgium: Brussels

In a nutshell...

Known as the capital of comic strips, Brussels is also unique for its mix of modern buildings and Art Nouveau style homes.

An animated and festive city, it is not rare to witness a fanfare or a parade in the Grand Place nor is it uncommon to see the Mannekenpis being adomed in a new costume; Brussels is a city for walking.
The city is spread out, with 19 districts depicting many different faces of the capital. Ixelles is famous for its nightlife, where Saint-Gilles, particularly the Maison Horta, is popular with those who are interested in Art Nouveau.
Truly European in character, Brussels offers all the Belgian specialities, from beer to waffles, but Italian and French dishes are also popular. This is a city where everyone can find something of interest.

LE ROY D ESPAGNE

LE ROY D ESPAGNE

Le Roy d'Espagne tavern, Grand Place, was built in 1697 and was originally the building for the bakers guild. The establishments name is in reference to Charles II who, in 1697, was the king of Spain and the Sovereign of the Meridional Netherlands which at the time, included modern day Belgium. A bust in his likeness is still on the building's facade and surrounded by symbols common to bakers: force, wheat, the wind, the fire, the water, and foresight.

On the ground floor, above the main entrance, Saint-Aubert, the patron saint of bakers is still visible. After having been a hardware store for some time, the building became a cafe in 1952 and soon became a top spot for beer lovers and those wanting some authentic Belgian food. There is a large wood burning fire place downstairs and also a patio. Either is ideal for sipping a Leffe blonde or brune, a Gueuzes or a raspberry Belle-Vue. Food specialties include grilled meats, creek rabbit, and for dessert, the classic Belgian waffle with whipped cream or sugar.
