Belgium: Brussels

In a nutshell...

Known as the capital of comic strips, Brussels is also unique for its mix of modern buildings and Art Nouveau style homes.

An animated and festive city, it is not rare to witness a fanfare or a parade in the Grand Place nor is it uncommon to see the Mannekenpis being adomed in a new costume; Brussels is a city for walking.
The city is spread out, with 19 districts depicting many different faces of the capital. Ixelles is famous for its nightlife, where Saint-Gilles, particularly the Maison Horta, is popular with those who are interested in Art Nouveau.
Truly European in character, Brussels offers all the Belgian specialities, from beer to waffles, but Italian and French dishes are also popular. This is a city where everyone can find something of interest.

CAFE LA BROCANTE

This café on an angle is an institution in the Marolles district and the Jeu-de-Balle plaza. Open for more than 22 years, it opens its doors at 5am to welcome traders of second hand wares before they hit the streets. Some play chess, others backgammon, still other come on Sundays for the live music, but above all, everyone drinks beer. The decor, a mirror image of the neighborhood and its professions, is filled with kitch. Booths of old leather welcome customers looking to revive themselves with Brussels omelettes made of potatoes, ham, black sausage, or Bruegel head (a terrine of veal and pork head). There are more than 30 artisnal beers available. In the summer, tables and chairs are put outside in the pedestrian street around the corner. All through the day, this cafe offers a glimpse into typical Belgian life.
