Belgium: Brussels

In a nutshell...

Known as the capital of comic strips, Brussels is also unique for its mix of modern buildings and Art Nouveau style homes.

An animated and festive city, it is not rare to witness a fanfare or a parade in the Grand Place nor is it uncommon to see the Mannekenpis being adomed in a new costume; Brussels is a city for walking.
The city is spread out, with 19 districts depicting many different faces of the capital. Ixelles is famous for its nightlife, where Saint-Gilles, particularly the Maison Horta, is popular with those who are interested in Art Nouveau.
Truly European in character, Brussels offers all the Belgian specialities, from beer to waffles, but Italian and French dishes are also popular. This is a city where everyone can find something of interest.

A LA MORT SUBITE

A LA MORT SUBITE

Located near the Saint-Hubert galeries, "A la mort subite" (Sudden Death) is a brasserie where beer connaisseurs will quickly make the connection with the drink of the same name. Interestingly, the brasserie has been around much longer than the drink!

Around 1910, the same address wasd known as La Cour Royale or the Royal Court and run by a Mr. Théophile Vossen. He welcomed many from the nearby National Banque who waiting their turn, would play 421. The unfortunate loser "died." When time was lacking, they began to play der des der, one round, hence the name "Sudden Death." Before long, the phrase became a popular expression and Mr. Vossen renamed the establishment "A la mort subite." Soon after, his beer also took the name and the tradition continues today with Vossen's great grandsons serving in the same bar, today a bit more proper and fashionable.
