Belgium: Brussels
Areas in the city:
In a nutshell...
Known as the capital of comic strips, Brussels is also unique for its mix of modern buildings and Art Nouveau style homes.
An animated and festive city, it is not rare to witness a fanfare or a parade in the Grand Place nor is it uncommon to see the Mannekenpis being adomed in a new costume; Brussels is a city for walking.
The city is spread out, with 19 districts depicting many different faces of the capital. Ixelles is famous for its nightlife, where Saint-Gilles, particularly the Maison Horta, is popular with those who are interested in Art Nouveau.
Truly European in character, Brussels offers all the Belgian specialities, from beer to waffles, but Italian and French dishes are also popular. This is a city where everyone can find something of interest.

Located just next to the galeries Saint-Hubert, the brasserie A la mort subite is connected to the beer of the same name for all beer connoisseurs. The brasserie, however, existed well before the drink.
In around 1910, on the same spot was an establishment called La Cour Royale, run by Mister Théophile Vossen: his place welcomed the workers from the national bank just next door who patiently awaited their turn by playing the game 421. The loser became dead. When time was short, they played one last game played in a single go, hence the name mort subite or sudden death. Soon enough, this name became popular and Mister Théophile Vossen renamed his establishment "A la mort subite". Giving the name to the beer was only a short step, which he gladly took.
The tradition is preserved by his great-grandsons, who still serve gueuzes in this now listed building.
