Practical travel guide

Luggage

All Thalys trains have luggage racks. Specially designed areas are available for larger pieces of luggage at the end of each carriage. Each passenger is limited to two suitcases and one piece of luggage.

You can store your luggage onboard free of charge (and under your own responsibility)

  • on the overhead luggage racks;
  • on the luggage racks on either side of each carriage;
  • on the floor, between certain back-to-back seats.

In order to ensure the comfort and safety of all, luggage is only allowed on the train in accordance with the Thalys luggage regulations.

Label your luggage before you leave !

For the safety of all our passengers, all bags on board Thalys must have a label attached. If you haven't got any labels, you can create labels here.

To create these labels, you need Adobe© Reader© version 5.

The luggage regulations

Accepted luggage:

The following items are regarded as luggage: bags, rucksacks, suitcases, trunks and grips and other containers whose largest dimension is less than 85 cm.

How it is packed and its volume and weight must allow the item to be carried by the passenger and be placed in the designated areas in the train without causing a hindrance to the free movement of passengers on the train. In order to comply with the on-board regulations, items must be labelled by the passenger, stating the passenger's first and last names.

Luggage items are the entire responsibility of passengers.

Characteristics:

Maximum number per paying passenger: 3
Maximum weight per item: not checked
Dimensions of an item of luggage: the largest dimension must be ≤ 85 cm
The following also count as "luggage":

  • Manual or electrical wheelchairs;
  • Prams and buggies for small children (folded);
  • Bicycles contained in a loose cover 120 x 90 cm (front wheel removed);
  • Folding bicycles;
  • Skis in a protective cover;
  • Surfboards in a loose cover 120 x 90 cm;
  • Portable musical instruments.

With regard to all these "Luggage" items, in order to be accepted they must be placed in the "Luggage" areas and may not be placed in the luggage racks situated over the seating, in order to avoid the obvious risk of accident in the event they should fall.
Special regulations for Thalys Snow and Thalys Sun:
Additional space is reserved for on-board storage while travelling in carriages 6/16 and 7/17. On the Thalys Sun, ice-boxes are regarded as luggage and are allowed provided their characteristics are in accordance with the conditions.

Non-accepted luggage, items and containers

Luggage that constitutes a hindrance or is obviously excessively heavy
This concerns bags, suitcases, trunks, etc.

  • whose dimensions far exceed the authorised limit of 85 cm (largest dimension).
  • whose weight is obviously too great and requires that the item be handled by two persons.

Objects that cause a hindrance to or inconvenience other passengers

This concerns containers containing products not habitually carried by normal passengers (containers for the transport of comestibles that give off unpleasant odours).

Hazardous substances and items

Whilst this list is not exhaustive, this concerns luggage or containers for the transport of unloaded weapons, firearms, explosives, flammable liquids or any other dangerous substances (chemicals, biological substances, etc.).

Merchandise intended for trade purposes

This concerns luggage or containers for the transport of products whose quantity or packaging unequivocally shows that travel as a passenger is being abused in order to transport goods that should have been entrusted to a carrier specialising in the transport of such items.

Prohibited goods

This concerns luggage or containers containing products prohibited by customs or any other official agency (e.g. narcotics).

Failure to comply with these conditions

In the event of excess luggage or failure to adhere to these conditions, the Train Manager may charge you €30 per item of luggage or refuse to allow such luggage onto the Thalys.
