From Miro TO Warhol. The Berardo collection in Paris

October 16th 2008 – February 22nd 2009

Born in 1944 on Madeira Island, José Berardo is one of the most influential Portuguese entrepreneurs. An iconoclast who emigrated to South Africa at the age of 19 where he made a fortune in several business sectors including gold and wine trading, banking and telecoms, he assembled on his return to Portugal one of the most interesting collections of modern and contemporary art in Europe.

The collection, which includes 862 works and allows the viewer, according to Berardo, “to experience the 20th century”, is now presented in a museum named after him, located between the Belém Tower and the Hieronymites Monastery in Lisbon.

The more than seventy works from the collection presented at the Musée du Luxembourg are organised around four themes: Surrealism (Miró, Dali, Ernst, Breton…), one of the major themes of the pre-WWII period, Abstraction from 1910 to immediately after WWII (Mondrian, Tanguy, Arp…), the confrontation of Europe and America in the 1960s with New Realism and Pop Art (Warhol, Klein, Soulages, Mitchell…) and post-1970s creations (Schnabel, Stella…).

The exhibition will be curated by André Cariou, director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper and a recognised specialist in 20th century painting.
