Belgium: Brussels

bruxelles

In a nutshell...

Known as the capital of comic strips, Brussels is also unique for its mix of modern buildings and Art Nouveau style homes.

An animated and festive city, it is not rare to witness a fanfare or a parade in the Grand Place nor is it uncommon to see the Mannekenpis being adomed in a new costume; Brussels is a city for walking.
The city is spread out, with 19 districts depicting many different faces of the capital. Ixelles is famous for its nightlife, where Saint-Gilles, particularly the Maison Horta, is popular with those who are interested in Art Nouveau.
Truly European in character, Brussels offers all the Belgian specialities, from beer to waffles, but Italian and French dishes are also popular. This is a city where everyone can find something of interest.

Photography Summer
Lightning flashes in the name of art.

The first "photography summer" in 2006 set the tone for the following editions. This year, once again, the aim has been to coordinate a number of projects and initiatives in photography, so as to develop a single large-scale event that spans across Belgium in particular but other countries as well.

Underpinned by a common theme, the projects of this Eté de la Photographie all work in the same direction: to help artistic and innovative photography reach a wider public, and to give room to new, avant-guardist techniques and themes that would otherwise struggle to push foreward.

The program includes events and workshops dedicated to photography in general, reportage, fashion photo-work, competitions, and photography in urban settings. This major event is backed by the same team of sponsors as the previous edition: the Goethe institute, the Ixelles museum and the Centrale électrique. Thogether, these sponsors and the festival organisers are working to create a program which highlights the current trends of Belgian and international photography.
